Kottayam District: A Political Landscape in Kerala's Upcoming Elections
Overview of Kottayam District
Kottayam, one of the picturesque districts in Kerala, is uniquely surrounded by various other districts. It does not border the sea nor does it share its boundaries with another state. The Vembanad Lake lies between Alappuzha and Kottayam, forming a natural boundary. To the north of Kottayam is Ernakulam, while Idukki is to the east, Alappuzha to the west, and Pathanamthitta to the south. This district is renowned for its lush greenery and serene backwaters, framed by beautiful hills.
Economic Significance
Kottayam is well-known for its spices and rubber, which have provided fertile ground for the Kerala Congress leaders. Various factions of the Kerala Congress continue to thrive in this district, leveraging its resources for their political endeavors. The Rubber Board is headquartered here, and Kottayam is also referred to as the 'Akshara Nagari' or 'City of Letters'.
Historical Importance
Historically, Kottayam has been a significant site for various movements, including the Vaikom Satyagraha. The district has witnessed struggles led by prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Periyar, and Vinoba Bhave. The movement here even led to the dismissal of C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer, the Dewan of Travancore. The primary sources of income in this district include rubber cultivation, cashew farming, and fruit production, alongside substantial coconut and rice farming due to its abundant water resources. The presence of many Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) also contributes significantly to the local economy.
Political Dynamics
Politically, the majority of the seats in Kottayam are contested by the Left and Congress alliances, relying heavily on the various factions of the Kerala Congress. These leaders have historically secured significant positions in both state and central governments.
2021 Election Recap
Kottayam has been a battleground for prominent leaders from different factions of the Kerala Congress. Notable figures such as Oommen Chandy, P.C. George, and K.M. Mani have represented this district in the Kerala Assembly for many years. It is widely believed that at least one or two ministers in the Kerala government will emerge from Kottayam. The 2021 elections saw a fierce competition, with the Left winning five out of nine seats and the UDF securing four.
