Mangaldai, April 7: The Mangaldai Assembly constituency holds significant importance in Central Assam. Initially reserved for Scheduled Castes during the 9th Assam Assembly elections in 1991, it has now been released from this reservation after 34 years.

Candidates in the Race

Six candidates are vying for votes in this constituency: Nilima Devi from the BJP, Rijumoni Talukdar representing Congress, Azizur Rahman from AIUDF, Harekrishna Deka of TMC, Ajit Acharya from SUCI-Communist, and Independent candidate Prabin Kumar Deka.

All candidates are newcomers to the electoral scene, employing various strategies to connect with voters over the past ten days. However, Nilima Devi of the BJP and Rijumoni Talukdar of Congress are leading the campaign efforts.

Campaign Strategies

Star campaigners from the BJP, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and national president Nitin Nabin, have actively participated in rallies within the constituency. Nilima Devi has been conducting extensive campaigns, engaging party workers at all levels to attract voters.

In contrast, Congress has not yet showcased any prominent campaign figures for Rijumoni Talukdar. Nevertheless, Talukdar is diligently working to connect with voters through smaller gatherings, visits to local religious sites, and door-to-door outreach.

Electoral Landscape

The recent delimitation has altered the constituency's geopolitical dynamics. Current electoral statistics indicate a total voter count of 201,732, comprising 111,740 males and 99,989 females.

Demographically, the constituency includes approximately 122,000 Hindus, around 30,000 from linguistic minority communities, and nearly 78,000 Muslim voters, which also encompasses religious minorities.

Past Election Insights

In the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress candidate Basanta Das secured victory with 111,386 votes, while BJP's Gurujyoti Das garnered 87,320 votes. However, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, following the delimitation, saw a notable improvement for the BJP, with their candidate receiving 96,213 votes compared to Congress's 58,288 votes.

As the April 9 elections approach, while all six candidates are striving for public support, the primary contest appears to be between the BJP and Congress.
