Goa Receives ₹6 Crore for Urban Forestry Initiative to Combat Climate Change

Significant Funding for Urban Green Spaces in Goa

In a major move to enhance environmental balance, the central government has approved a funding of ₹6 crore for Goa's ambitious 'Namo One Scheme'. The primary aim of this initiative is to develop dedicated green spaces in urban areas, effectively addressing the challenges posed by rising temperatures and the adverse effects of climate change. This crucial decision was announced by Goa's Forest Minister, Vishwajit Rane, on Tuesday.

The Forest Minister highlighted that this financial support from the central government will significantly boost the development of urban forests in the state's metropolitan regions. He clarified that the National Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority has given its nod to the guidelines of the 'Urban Health Mission for Oxygen' (Namo) forest scheme. This mission emphasizes restoring natural environments within cities.

Regarding the implementation of the scheme, he mentioned that over the next five years, urban local bodies and the state government will collaborate to expand forests in various cities and towns. This initiative will further strengthen Goa's recently launched urban forestry program. The Forest Department and the Urban Development Department will work together to enhance environmental sustainability in urban areas, ensuring residents have access to a cleaner environment.
