Tensions Rise Between Congress and SP Ahead of 2027 Uttar Pradesh Elections

Growing Rift Between Congress and SP

As the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approach, tensions have escalated between the Congress party and the Samajwadi Party (SP). Amidst sharp exchanges between these allies of the 'India' coalition, senior Congress leader Imran Masood has launched a strong critique against SP leader Udayveer Singh. This statement comes at a time when both parties are publicly debating their political strength and the future of their alliance, raising questions about whether this partnership, which may benefit them in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, will endure until the next Assembly elections.

Masood's Criticism of SP

In response to Singh's comments, Masood asserted that the SP is more reliant on the alliance than Congress. He emphasized that it is the SP that is pushing for the coalition, claiming that their partnership was instrumental in winning 37 seats in 2024, whereas in 2022, they struggled to surpass 120 seats. Furthermore, Masood accused the SP of failing to support influential Muslim leaders, stating that the party cannot tolerate any Muslim leader or one who speaks out, a role now filled by Congress.

Historical Context and Future Implications

Masood referenced prominent Muslim leaders historically associated with the SP, questioning who has suffered losses within the party, citing figures like Mukhtar, Atiq Ahmed, and Azam Khan, who are not held accountable. He dismissed the notion that their electoral success depended on an alliance with the SP, asserting that his victory was due to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi's influence. He noted that he did not campaign for the SP during the elections, despite their coalition.

These remarks are part of a series of public statements highlighting the growing unease between the two opposition parties as they prepare for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections. Tensions have further escalated following a suggestion from the newly appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress president, Raj Kumar Singh Patel, that Congress would demand equal seat sharing in any alliance with the SP for the upcoming Assembly elections.
